According to a study conducted by the Dove Foundation, family movies are the biggest money makers. The study showed that the gross profit of family movies averages $94 million, while R-rated movies only average $11 million. Family movies end up bringing in profit another way besides in the theater: merchandising. Just look at the Shrek movies, “The Lion King,” “A Bug’s Life,” and “The Incredibles.” They have pulled in a massive amount of merchandising profit with toys, clothing, and endorsements. Not to mention, DVD and Pay-Per-View sales further increase profit.

Gary DePew is Avalon Family Entertainment’s President, CEO, and is a director. He has been involved in many successful projects including the recent movie “Hansel and Gretel.” Avalon Family Entertainment’s current project is “Jack & the Beanstalk.” The movie stars Christopher Lloyd, Katey Segal, Gilbert Gottfried, Chevy Chase, Colin Ford, and James Earl Jones as the voice of the Giant. Another movie Avalon has in production is “Snow White.”

Avalon Family Entertainment plans to make more live-action films that are based on popular fairy tales. There are two advantages to this plan. One is that the stories and characters are well-known, thus automatically bringing in an audience who wants to see their favorite stories brought to life. The second advantage is that there is no cost to the underlying rights of these stories, as they are public domain. Avalon is considering the following titles for projects: “Cinderella,” “Robin Hood,” “Gulliver’s Travels,” “The Little Mermaid,” “The Three Little Pigs,” “The Pied Piper of Hamlin,” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
